Southern Front

A Martin Maryland, of No. 14 (SAAF) Squadron [1]is sent on a photographic reconnaissance mission over Kismaayo, Gobwen, Afmadow, Jilib and Bardera (where three Savoia-Marchetti SM.81 and three Fiat CR.42 are reported on the airfield). An Italian fighter, of  413a Squadriglia CT, take off to repel the South African plane. The aircraft returned to Garissa after 03:04 flight time. Once again, the South African crew noted the advantage of Martin Maryland’s speed. [2]

According to a telegram sent to the local South African command, the staff shortage due to sick leave is badly felt and the various units are forced to operate under authorized standards. For example, the situation of No.41 (SAAF) Squadron is such that it is missing: 20 machine gunners, 10 radio operators and 10 pilots.

According to a message from General Pierre van Ryneveld (Chief of Staff South Africa) :

« While plans to expand the air force have resulted in the establishment of a potential supply of mechanics in the event of a conflict, many have joined army units and are now stranded with the latter. As a result, SAAF is understaffed in terms of specialists to maintain the Squadron already deployed in Kenya. In order to resolve the problem, I ask Major-General Alan Cunningham to order the release of 350 to the local South African command. At the same time, I instruct Brigadier J. Holthouse (head of the purchasing mission in the United States) to try to convince the Americans to probe the possibility of recruiting specialized mechanics for the SAAF on Martin Maryland, Lockheed Lodestar and Curtis Mohawk. » [3]
