1st July 1940

1st Juillet 1940

The beginning of the month begins calmly and is mainly aimed at reinforcing the training of the pilots.

The Red Section (Squadron Leader Joseph R. Kayll ; Flying Officer Peter Collard ; Pilot Officer Cecil R. Montgomery) took off at 12h09 for a patrol over Beachy Head (Raid X38). The unknown contact turns out to be a Bristol Blenheim. Pilots return to land at Kenley Airfield at 13h04.

The ORB unfortunately does not indicate the aircraft used, but we can assume that Squadron Leader Jospeh R. Kayll is flying his traditional P3109 and P2768 for Flying Officer Peter Collard. The case of Pilot Officer Cecil R. Montgomery is more complicated, this one alternating during all July 1940 between several aircraft.

The exact date of this photo is not known. It would have been taken at Kenley airfield between the return of No.615 Squadron from France and the beginning of the Battle of Britain. The pilot in the foreground would be Pilot Officer Cecil R. Young. Collection : Drew Davidson.
